Our Bucket List Christmas In Baja, Mexico

#BUCKETLISTCHRISTMAS BAJA MEXICO

Ever since Josh and I spent a day in Todos Santos, Mexico 4 years ago, I knew I wanted to come back with the family. The famous license plate wall in Todos Santos says it all.

Christmas Eve surfing

In the spirit of giving your kids experience and not things, we spent Christmas eve learning to surf on Cerritos Beach.

Christmas at the Watkins took on a whole new look in 2021. For the first time we decided to use our holidays to check some items off our bucket list.  After the last 21 months of the pandemic putting a damper on our love of adventure, it was time to test the waters of international travel and head to La Paz and Todos Santos, Mexico in the Baja.

It was October when I started thinking about what to get the kids (ages 20, 17 & 14) for Christmas.  I had an overwhelming sinking feeling when I thought about having our usual Christmas.  I knew in my heart that there wasn't anything I could wrap and put under the tree that would give my kids what they really needed this year.  All of us, Josh and I too, needed different gifts this year.  We needed the gift of confidence- that the world isn't a big scary place.  We needed the gift of having an adventure, and it not getting cancelled.  We needed the gift of seeing different places so that we could appreciate the precious home that we have. We needed sunshine and salt water and learning to surf.  We needed to see how other cultures are dealing with this pandemic.  We needed to see that the world is still alive and function despite what the news says. We needed to accept and successfully navigate the new hoops covid has put on travel. We needed a break from our every day life because we were all on BIG TIME burn out.  Because necessity is the mother of all invention, the Watkins created #bucketlistchristmas which focused on giving our souls what we truly needed.

Why did we choose Baja, Mexico? Selfishly, swimming with the whale sharks has been on my bucket list for decades.  There aren't many places you can do this and it's definitely a seasonal adventure. La Paz, Mexico just happens to be the closest location to having a close encounter with a whale shark.  There were other reasons for the Baja too: 1- it's a direct flight that's only around 3 hours 2- Mexico is letting people in to travel 3- Jonas is in AP Spanish and we wanted to use his skills 4- La Paz has a fun Christmas market we knew our kids would love 5- you can get great Airbnb's for a great price.  Josh and I took a trip to La Paz 4 years ago for our 20th anniversary and have been itching to return ever since.

Our itinerary consisted of flying into San Jose Del Cabo and driving 2.5 hours north to La Paz for 3 nights on the Sea of Cortez.  Then we headed west and south for 80 minutes to Cerritos Beach, just south of Todos Santos on the Pacific side of the peninsula. Ending with 2 nights in Cabo to clear our covid tests and be close to the airport.  There is almost no similarities between Cabo and La Paz or Cerritos Beach.  Although fun for 24 hours, Cabo is the Las Vegas of Mexico and definitely too busy/touristy for our taste.  The whole trip was fabulous, easy with the most wonderfully fresh food.  All of us would repeat the whole trip, skipping Cabo since it's a once and done kinda place. (Although our Cabo Airbnb was a luxurious, brand new build at a steal of a price.)

Our Bucket list highlights included: Swimming with the whale sharks, exploring Isla Espiritu, snorkeling with the sea lions, Christmas Market in La Paz,  street churros and gorditas, learning to surf, fresh pineapples on the beach, exploring the tide pools, enjoying our Helinox chairs, fresh food from land and sea, Jo speaking fluent Spanish, enjoying each other's company and taking a break from reality.

We spent our last 2 nights in Cabo so that we could take our covid tests.  It turned out to be super easy because Delta has partnered with eMed and we brought our covid tests with us from home and just took them online with their customer support. Each person took 3o minutes via video call but sitting in out gorgeous Airbnb made it effortless.  I highly suggest using this method when traveling abroad if you can.

At the end of the trip everyone felt recharged and ready to return to reality, but we were coming home more confident than when we arrived.  As Josh mused, "it's time to just learn to live with all the changes covid has brought to travel rather than avoid traveling." We feel more confident now that we can start to roam the earth again knowing how to bring covid tests with us. I wish we could always travel for the holidays because it makes me skip all the frivolous purchasing and give the gift of time and adventure to my family - and isn't that really the goal?

First Stop, La Paz on the Sea of Cortez

The capital of the Baja is La Paz and is location approximately 2 hours north from the San Jose del Cabo Airport. The vibe is night and day different than Cabo, it's much more local.

The colors of the Baja

We rented an Airbnb in town in La Paz that was also a couple blocks from the Marina and Malecon. I could have spent days just trying to capture all the painted walls.

Swimming with the whale sharks

Swimming with the whale sharks has been top 5 on my bucket list for a long time. There are only a handful of places in the world where this can be done and La Paz is one of them. Our tour with TUNATUNA was fantastic and Sophia, our guide was fantastic.

Mom's Christmas Present

This was my Christmas present and it completely delivered. I didn't take many photos because I just wanted to enjoy the moment with these gentile giants.

Christmas Lights on the Malecon

It was fun to see palm trees wrapped in Christmas lights and walk the malecon at night with holiday decorations. Being from the snowy mountains of evergreens, it definitely felt different.

Our beach time on the Isla Espiritu

We took a whole day tour to experience the Isla Espiritu which is a protected UNESCO area because of its sea life. We lucked out because often times the weather doesn't allow excursions to the island.

Playa Candelero on Isla Espiritu

Soaking up some afternoon sunshine after swimming with the sea lions.

Swimming with the sea lions on Isla Espiritu

Originally I had not really been excited to swim with the sea lions because they seem smelling but I had completely underestimated how amazing sharing the water with them would be.

Scary face rock where sacrifices use to take place

Although Isla Espiritu currently has no inhabitants, it definitely has a strange and scary history. This rock was the alter of sacrifice to the gods when natives did live on the island. Both creepy and cool all at the same time.

The Malecon that welcomed us after our day in the Sea of Cortez

A perfect evening and view of the Malecon when we returned from out swim with the Sea Lions and tour of Isla Espiritu. Hard to believe it was Christmas time, considering where we came from.

The internet is for finding places to eat in foreign countries too.

This was our favorite restaurant in La Paz. My blue tortillas were topped with avocado, apples, tomatillo and lime. One of the best things I have ever eaten! ALWAYS use the web to find restaurants in foreign countries. And always enjoy the street food!

Next stop Todos Santos on the Pacific Coast of the Baja

Less than 1.5 hours west and south of La Paz was our next stop of Todos Santos on the Pacific Side of the Baja. The price of Lodging has increased since people have discovered this gem of a place so we stayed 10 minutes south in Cerritos Beach.

True Baja Charm in Todos Santos

I could photograph for days in this town. Every door way and street is a photographic treat. You can see why I wanted to take a family picture in this charming town. Every inch is a photographic feast.

Learning to surf on Cerritos Beach with CRT

I can't picture a more perfect place to learn to surf than Cerritos Beach & the CRT learn to surf crew made it so we all actually learned and could stand up... even me at age 45. They included all day use of their boards & provided us a shade awning too.

Christmas eve surfing

The water temperature was amazing and Sasha and Will stayed in the waves until it was too dark to see. One of my favorite Christmas memories ever!

Fresh pineapples on the beach in Cerritos Beach

The magical thing about Cerritos was that there were just enough amenities to make it fun but not crowded. After surfing for a few hours, Will picked us up this amazing treat from a guy who had hooked a car battery to a blender on the beach.

Evening tide pools in Cerritos

When Jo was 7 he begged for a salt water fish tank. These tide pools were filled with all the same fish, crab and snails we use to keep in his tank. He was in heaven visiting his fish tank days.

Helinox camp chairs NEVER travel without one

Josh loves is Helinox chair and brings it EVERY WHERE. For Christmas presents every one else got a Helinox of their own. We can't live without these chairs anymore. In fact, I'm sitting in the beach chair as I type this next to my fireplace at home.

Farm to table dinner at Heirbabuena

This is the pinnacle of fresh eating. You walk through their garden to get to the open air restaurant where the menu is inspired by what's fresh and organic. Best Christmas Eve dinner ever!

Exploring Cabo and San Jose

Cabo felt like the Vegas of the Baja and San Jose Del Cabo felt more like the artisan style of Monterey Bay, CA. The 2 sister cities are vastly different from each other and completely different from our previous cities and towns.

THE OFFICE in Cabo

I asked our Airbnb host, If we only do 1 thing in Cabo, what would you suggest? She sent us to The Office and YUP it was all of Cabo at one stop. We had some good laughs at the tourist culture around us.

Last sunset in the Baja on the Helinox beach chair

Our gorgeous Airbnb in Cabo was brand new and right next to Costco. It had an incredible view of the bay in Cabo and all the cruise ships. We spent our last night soaking in the view surrounded by bougainvillea (next to the Costco)

Because I love Bougainvillea

As my family can attest, I LOVE bougainvillea and it colors the Baja everywhere. How could I not use this pink Bougainvillea with Jo's pink Pit Viper glasses.

Family Portrait in Todos Santos

Although this portrait won't win any awards, it wins the most laughter ever while creating our family picture. We sat and watched one car park and continue to push the parked car in front about 2 feet forward so it could fit in curbside parking.
